High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP): What It Does

HPFP (high-pressure fuel pump). What does the HPFP do in a car? If you compare a car to the human body, it is the heart: just as the heart keeps blood flowing through the body, the fuel pump keeps the engine continuously supplied with fuel. Look a little closer, though, and it turns out the HPFP does more than that:

  • it meters fuel precisely according to engine load;
  • it delivers fuel under pressure to the injectors;
  • it ensures fuel is injected into the cylinders at exactly the right moment.

HPFP basics

It meters fuel precisely according to engine load, delivers it under pressure to the injectors and makes sure fuel is injected into the cylinders at the right moment.

Just as the heart keeps blood flowing, the pump supplies fuel to the engine non-stop, and the engine cannot run without it. Its condition can be assessed with HPFP testing.
